A few years ago, when I was staying on Tiree for a few days, I just couldn't sleep for the moonlight shining in through the curtains. Eventually, I got up and pulled some clothes on and crept out of the house and down on to the beach, where I must have wandered for about an hour. It was a still night and was so absolutely quiet, apart from the soft sound caused by the sea and the 'shusssshing' sound of grains of sand and tiny pieces of shells tumbling over and over in the water moving gently backwards and forwards over the beach. It was one of the most serene and peaceful moments of my life. Then as I turned and climbed back up to the cottage I was staying in, this little scene imprinted itself on my memory. I checked my watch as I went back through the door and it was just midnight and almost as bright as day.
